Toyota Prius Tops Sales Charts in Japan for 16th Month
Toyota's Prius gasoline-electric hybrid retained the top position in Japan's market for new passenger car sales for the 16th consecutive month in August, according to data released by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Mini Vehicle Association.
The world’s biggest automaker recorded sales of 22,263 Prius hybrids in Japan, where demand for Prius is increasing, helped by the government’s tax breaks and subsidies for purchasers of eco-friendly cars.
Honda Motor Co.’s Fit compact car ranked second with sales of 17,258 units, followed by Daihatsu’s Tanto minicar in third at 14,783 and Suzuki’s WagonR minivan at 13,455 units.
Among hybrids, Honda’s Insight hybrid finished 15th, selling 4,751 units.
Newest Prius, now in its third generation since its 1997 introduction, is the best-selling gas-electric hybrid in the world, with a total of 1.8 million units sold around the world. It is so popular in Japan that customers must wait six months to take delivery after placing an order for a Prius due to robust demand for the latest model.
